750th Anniversary of the Birth of Robert the Bruce – Marketing
On the 11th July 2024, Dumfries & Galloway celebrated the 750th Anniversary of the birth of Robert the Bruce. The Medieval Bruce Heritage Trust, alongside The People’s Project and The Imaginarium/The Gallovidian Way organised a 6-month long programme of activities to mark the occasion.
Thousands attended the finale celebrations on Dumfries High Street for a Medieval Market & Fayre and a Storytelling & Re-enactment day at Castledykes Park.
The programme of events showcased Dumfries & Galloway’s significant role in his life and Scottish Medieval History, with a huge wave of local community support, and visitors travelling from as far as Brazil, Switzerland, Essex and Manchester to join in the celebrations and despite the dreicht traditional Scottish weather, there was a tremendous turn out.
I joined the project in January 2024, and I was really excited to work on a community project of this scale that had so much support to create an extensive programme of events. I supported the project in creating a leaflet, posters and marketing materials working with Alba Printers, social media campaigns and PR. We launched the programme on Saturday 10th February with The Medieval Bruce Heritage Trust’s annual ‘Slaying of the Red Comyn’ re-enactment.
The programme showcased the power of what can be achieved when communities come together to celebrate their shared heritage. The community collaborations had remarkable outcomes, and I will remember standing dancing on the Dumfries Plainstanes to Clanadonia in the rain on the finale for a long time.
